“Few people translate hardship into success as Jessica Poland – better known by her children’s-book-sourced moniker Charlotte Sometimes – has done.

Originating from Wall Township, New Jersey, Jessica’s childhood was riddled with uncertainty and difficulty. The adopted schoolgirl had to wait until the age of 13 to be introduced to her birth mother, and meanwhile, Charlotte spent a majority of her early teenage years immersing in the wealth of dance and musical theater, also enduring a battle with anorexia during this period. However, Charlotte finally found her true passion at the age of 14, when she picked up a guitar.

From thereon forth, it was love, as Charlotte began to pursue a music career, securing a management deal with the renowned Crush Management (Fall Out Boy, Courtney Love, Travie McCoy) at the modest age of 16. However, these years were hindered by a condition called Condylar Resorption, which affected Charlotte’s jaw joints and required facial construction surgery, but this could not stop Charlotte, as she came back stronger, securing a record deal with Universal Music Group imprint Geffen Records at the age of 19, and entering the studio with production powerhouses S*A*M & Sluggo (Metro Station, Cobra Starship) soon after, before eventually releasing her major label debut ‘Waves And The Both Of Us’ in 2008. The album was met with critical acclaim, accumulating raving praise from both fans and critics, and being lauded as an a collection of heartfelt songs that combined indie-pop with elements of electronica, rock, and folk to create a diverse, mature, and ultimately accessible pop music album.

Widespread music video circulation and minor radioplay was met with accolades such as VH1′s coveted ‘You Oughta Know’ feature, Alternative Press’ ‘Top 100 Bands You Need To Know’, iTunes’ Editors’ Choice, as well as spotlights in print magazines such as Marie Clare and print newspapers, with The NY Times claiming that “her style earns her instant attention”. The album was also supported with extensive touring, as Charlotte hit the road alongside acts act as James Morrison, Gavin DeGraw, Butch Walker, The Hush Sound, Pat Monahan, We The Kings, and a summer-long spot on Warped Tour.

After parting ways with Geffen Records and changing management, Charlotte embarked upon the studio with producer Sheldon Steiger from Major Who and Sloan Alexander from Human Music Worldwide, before returning in early 2010 with ‘Sideways’, an EP featuring stripped-down songs that expose her battles with the music industry and illustrate her transition from a New Jersey girl to a young woman living in the Big Apple. In an unconventional move and in an attempt to give something back to her devoted fanbase, the EP was exclusively made available for free via Charlotte’s official website. Looking forward to the future, 2010 brought the recruitment of a full-time band, consisting of Regina Spektor’s former-guitarist Michael Reid and talented pianist Peter Remm. With this team, as well as a production team consisting of Sheldon Steiger, Sloan Alexander, Wes Hutchinson, and Anna Wayland, Charlotte is hard at work writing and recording her second full-length, due for release in 2011.”
